Memory
The project consists of the extension of an apartment on the rooftop of the top floor of a building in the Palermo neighborhood of Buenos Aires.
Our intention was to recreate a small domestic world and evoke the feeling of living in a cabin in the middle of the city—a warm place that invites contemplation.
Living in this space offers different perspectives: at times a distant view of the urban landscape, and at others, an intimate contemplation of its small courtyards.
The proposal doubles the surface area of the existing apartment. We decided to build the largest possible space to respond to the programmatic and functional needs we were given: on one hand, a strong and fluid relationship with the exterior space, and on the other, a home that can easily adapt to different ways of living as time goes by.
The project is organized over three levels. On the first level—the existing one—we intervened to create a living room and a kitchen, two spaces that can be separated or integrated thanks to a system of hidden sliding panels.
Above this level, there was an open-air terrace, where we used a lightweight construction system to develop the rest and work areas, organized around a central service core and two courtyards. The location of the core allowed us to free up the perimeter and thus maximize the entry of natural light; the location of the courtyards ensured that each room had a direct relationship with an outdoor space.
On the third level, we designed a rooftop garden terrace as a space for expansion and contemplation, with native and tall vegetation.
The layout is conceived with flexibility in mind: users have the possibility of transforming the space in different ways over time. The system of panels—composed of closets and hidden sliding doors—eliminates fixed partition walls entirely, allowing for various spatial and functional configurations.
A new dimension is introduced—time—which makes it possible to modify and manipulate the space according to the user’s needs. The project pushes the concepts of
